Geospatial Dimensions of Energy and Environment (GIS)

Offered Spring 2025 with Professor Erwin Villiger

Erwin Villiger

Adjunct with Johns Hopkins’ (JHU) Energy, Resources and Environment program

The energy economy and the natural environment operate over a common matrix, that of geography. To gain a comprehensive understanding of how these phenomena interact and interrelate, one must apply tools that can accurately represent and model the spatial dimension. In this class, students will explore the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and satellite imaging technologies to capture and analyze geospatial data. Topics covered include Spatial Thinking, GIS components, spatial data types and sources, and remote sensing principles, systems, and technologies, as they apply to energy and the environment. Students will investigate geospatial datasets and develop hands-on skills with mainstream and open-source GIS platforms.
